In April 2017 Synergia Coaching’s founder, Clare Barnett, will undertake the challenge of a lifetime by trekking along part of the Great Wall of China in aid of the Eve Appeal. Joining 20 or so other trekkers, the Charity Challenge organised 9 day adventure, will test Clare’s resolve and physical abilities to the max whilst providing her with a chance to raise awareness and much needed funds for her chosen charity.
Although this will be a fabulous opportunity for Clare to experience and learn about one of the wonders of the world, the trek will undoubtedly be one of the toughest physical challenges that she has undertaken. Most tourists to this iconic landmark tend to be day trippers visiting the more easily accessible parts of The Wall. Clare’s adventure will incorporate a multi-day trek day covering several sections of the 13,170 mile long wall by walking over its undulating passage for up to 8 hours per day.
The organisers describe the route along the Great Wall as a thrilling challenge of twists, turns, ups and downs that over the course of the week will involve a series of vigorous upwards climbs of over 10,000 relentless steps. With deliberately uneven steps, this trek will challenge even the most dedicated trekker. As the days progress the route follows the winding path along the mountains that spread either side of the Gubeikou Gateway. Exhaustion will quickly vanish as you are rewarded with sweeping views over the vast mountain ranges.
The Eve Appeal is the only UK national charity raising awareness and funding research in the five gynaecological cancers – ovarian, womb, cervical, vaginal and vulval. Gynae cancers are the second biggest cancer killer amongst women but are so little known or understood. From her own recent experiences Clare describes why the Eve Appeal’s research is so important:
“I have decided it’s time to do something huge for a charity that means something special to me! I am going to take part in a 7 day trek along the Great Walk of China! And I am doing this for The Eve Appeal. As many of you may know I had to take three months off work this summer to recover from a hysterectomy. Though I was clear of cancer this year, back in 2012 I had a cancer scare which led to this op! I am one of the lucky ones – I am sure we all know someone who has been affected by this cancer. It is one of the harsh ones, most difficult to diagnose and survive! Out of respect for the people who have survived it and in memory of those who haven’t, I am going to raise at least £3000 to help the fantastic research that The Eve Appeal support. Over the next five months I am going to do lots of fund raising events including cake sales, running a half marathon (and 5k). Please support me in these endeavours to make a difference!
Thank you all in advance”
How you can help
As mentioned above this a sponsored challenge to raise money for the eve appeal and all your donations will be gratefully received. Clare has set up a just giving page where you make donations online and track her fundraising efforts. Don’t worry, if prefer to donate anonymously you can do that on the just giving page. By the way, if you’re a UK tax payer, please make sure you select the option for the charity to claim gift on your contributions – its worth an additional 20% to them, so well worth doing.
Thanks again and watch this space for updates on Clare’s progress.
